Bai Ethnic Minority

The Bai Ethnic Minority has a population of 1,598,100, most oof which live in the Bai Autonomous Country in Dali in the west of Yunnan Province. The rest are scattered in some parts of Yunnan Province, Bijie in Guizhou province, Liangshan in Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan province and Sangzhi County in Hunan province. The language of Bai belongs to the Yi branch of Zang---Mian Austronesian of Han---Zang Phylum, including southern, mid and northern dialects. They have also invented their own written characters by referring to the Han's characters in order to keep their language. Thus many words are in fact taken from the Han language. Therefore, Chinese has been the most widely used language among the Bai people for a long time. The Bai people mainly believe in “Benzhu” (village god). A small group of them also believe in ghosts and Buddhism. The Bai ethnic minority has had a long history and well-developed culture. Its ancestors used to be called “Kunming” in the Han and Jin dynasties. In successive dynasties, they were named “Bairen”. Since the founding of the P.R.C, they have been formally named the Bai ethnic minority because of their worship of the color white. The Bai ethnic minority mainly deals with agriculture and fishery.
